What are some common toxic gases found in industry? Part1

 

      Chlorine gas

 

 

  Properties: yellowish green gas with strong odor, heavier than air.

  Poisoning route: inhalation, eye irritation

  Symptoms of poisoning: coughing, tearing, chest pain, dyspnea, asphyxiation caused by inhalation of large quantities

  Pollution sources: paper mills or tanker truck leaks, explosions

 

  Ammonia

 

  Properties: colorless gas with strong odor, lighter than air.

  Poisoning route: inhalation, eye irritation

  Symptoms of poisoning: tearing, sore throat, cough, headache, chest tightness, shortness of breath, vomiting, severe coma, resulting in death

  Pollution source: fertilizer plant or tanker truck leaks, explosions

 

  Sulfur dioxide

 

  Properties: colorless gas with irritating odor, heavier than air

  Poisoning route: inhalation, eye irritation

  Symptoms of poisoning: coughing, tearing, breathlessness. Can lead to rhinitis, pharyngitis, bronchitis, etc., serious poisoning will suffocate and die.

  Pollution sources: coke plant accidents, poor quality coal combustion

 

  Benzene

 

  Properties: colorless volatile liquid, heavier than air, its vapor has a special smell.

  Poisoning route: inhalation, eye irritation

  Symptoms of poisoning: dizziness and headache, nausea and vomiting, coma and convulsions, drop in blood pressure and respiratory failure after inhaling benzene vapor.

  Pollution sources: light chemical plants or tanker trucks leakage, explosion accidents

 

  Hydrogen sulfide

 

  Properties: colorless gas with rotten egg smell, heavier than air.

  Poisoning route: inhalation, sometimes through the skin

  Symptoms: photophobia, tearing, coughing, headache, nausea, vomiting, difficulty breathing, coma, respiratory paralysis and death in severe poisoning.

  Sources of pollution: chemical plant accidents, oil and gas well blowouts
