There are several main production processes for carbon tetrafluoride, and most related manufacturers produce according to these processes:
1. Instant synthetic fluorocarbon spraying method.
Basic principle: Fluorine gas (F₂) reacts immediately with carbon to produce carbon tetrafluoride, and the reaction equation is as follows: C + 2F₂→ CF₄.
Process principle: The raw materials used in the production method are easy to obtain, have good controllability, and have high product purity. This is a common production method in the industry at present. However, the chemical reaction process is very intense and there is a risk of explosion. Therefore, it is necessary to use specific explosion inhibitors and technologies to adjust the reaction mechanism. Common explosion inhibitors include Brf₃ and IF₅, but they themselves also have strong reaction activities, adding new risks.
2. Trifluorochloroethane Hydrogen chloride to generate CF4 method
Basic principle: Trifluoromonochloromethane (CF₃Cl) hydrogen chloride gas (HF) carbon tetrafluoride can be synthesized, and the reaction equation is as follows: CF₃Cl + HF → CF₄ + HCl.
Process principle: The production process is simple and the operation is safe. However, due to the gradual ban of CFC and HCFC, the sources of raw materials required for these processes are limited and will eventually stop being used.
3. Methane, hydrogen fluoride, chlorine to make CF4
Basic principle: Taking methane as an example, under the action of metal catalysts, the reaction equation for the production of carbon tetrafluoride in the gaseous state of methane gas and chlorine (Cl₂) and hydrogen fluoride (HF) is as follows: CH₄ + 4Cl₂ + 4HF → CF₄ + 8HCl.
Process principle: The technology is relatively mature, easy to use, and the collection of raw materials is relatively simple. However, the reaction process is difficult to control, the product variety is wide, the yield is low, and it is gradually replaced by other processing technologies.
4. Pyrolysis method
The basic principle is to heat polytetrafluoroethylene plastic to a high temperature state to dissolve it and produce carbon tetrafluoride.
Process principle: The raw material source is wide and the cost is low, but the product purity is low, and a large amount of waste gas and waste will be generated.
5. Electrolysis of salt water
Basic principle: Carbon tetrafluoride is made by electrolysis of chlorinated aqueous solution.
Process principle: The product has high purity and low cost, but it requires the use of electrostatic precipitator and lithium battery electrolyte, and the equipment investment is relatively high.
In addition, no matter what production method is used, crude carbon tetrafluoride needs to be specially treated to improve its purity. The treatment process mainly includes pickling, adsorption and distillation.
