Introduction to Helium-Neon Laser Gas

The helium-neon gas mixture is one of the most common and useful laser mediums. It is used extensively in continuous wave gas lasers emitting visible red light. Some background on the He-Ne laser gas combination:

  • Consists primarily of 90% helium and 10% neon by volume

  • Helium provides high energy transfer efficiency

  • Neon offers the upper lasing level and determines the laser wavelength

  • Emits light at 633 nm wavelength corresponding to neon red spectral line
  • Operates on a glow discharge principle providing continuous output

  • Can be configured as low power (

The helium facilitates neon excitation to achieve a continuous, stable red laser output usable across diverse optics applications.
